I went to Sam’s Club for hand towels and mayonnaise. I leave the parking lot and stop on red. To my left is a white Honda CRV. The driver is a young woman. She wears a dirty gray ball cap pulled low. The bill is tightly creased and her ponytail streams out the back. Her left hand knuckles are white clenching the wheel. She stares straight ahead, red lips pursed.

A homeless man struggles to his feet off the curb on my right. His beard is filthy brown, white around the mouth. Sunken eyes. Behind me, someone rolls down their window, offering money. He shuffles towards them. Cars honk, someone yells an expletive.

    The light turns green.

    The CRV accelerates away.

Horns echo and fade. The homeless man shuffles back to his curb.
